Australian price reduced by $1000

Key points

  • Tiguan R price reduced to $68,990
  • $1,000 drop comes as Harmon Kardon sound system becomes optional
  • Semiconductor shortage forces VW to decommission vehicles to meet demand

UPDATE, January 27, 2022: Volkswagen Australia has reduced the list price of its Tiguan R, just weeks after doing the same for the Golf R.

Originally slated to go on sale starting at $69,990, the 2022 Tiguan R will now cost $68,990 before road charges – a reduction of $1,000, due to a stock shortage of the standard Harmon Kardon sound system. .

As with the Golf R, premium audio equipment is now an optional $1,000 extra, while the Tiguan R will now come standard with the eight-speaker system found in lower grades.

Volkswagen Passenger Vehicles Brand Director Michal Szaniecki said the Tiguan R is still on track to launch in Australia in May/June, in line with the arrival of the Golf R Wagon, while the shortage of semi -drivers also hampered the R-Line Tiguan.

“The majority of the more than 7,000 expressions of interest and 1,000 deposits made for our new R range so far have been for the Tiguan R,” Szaniecki said.

“To keep the lines working, Harmon Kardon is becoming optional on the Tiguan R as it is with the Golf. Harman Kardon Tiguan Rs are still being built, as are versions with the standard eight-high sound system speakers familiar from the rest of the interval Tiguan.

“Because our customers typically select the higher-end variants, semiconductor constraints have particularly affected the Tiguan 162TSI R-Line. Thankfully, the refreshed Tiguan Allspace is coming in May.

“As well as a third row of seats or the extra storage space this model provides, we’ve made sure the Allspace has extra specs to more than improve the price per view over the Tiguans at five seats.”

Key points

  • Tiguan finally gets its own ‘R’ variant
  • The high tailgate will go on sale for the same price as the Golf R Wagon
  • The engine of the Tiguan R develops 235 kW and 400 Nm

December 14, 2021: Volkswagen’s first performance variant of its popular Tiguan midsize SUV will cost from $69,990 when it goes on sale locally in April 2022.

The Tiguan R begins an expansion of the company’s R product portfolio, joining next-generation versions of the Golf R hatchback and wagon that will be launched shortly before.

Pricing for the SUV is identical to the Golf R station wagon and positions it well above the $53,750 Tiguan 162TSI R-Line that was previously the top gas-powered variant.

VW’s fastest Tiguan has no direct rivals in the mid-size SUV segment. The closest performance SUV in price is the $67,440 Kodiaq RS from Czech VW Group brand Skoda, but it’s not just a larger seven-seater – its 180 kW and 370 Nm have more in common with GTI performance than R.

The Skoda also accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 6.6 seconds compared to 5.1 seconds for the Tiguan R.

The Tiguan’s fastest acceleration time was intended to be 4.9 seconds, but performance was reduced by a late decision to fit Australian versions with a slightly detuned engine to secure supply in 2022.

The 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder delivers the same 235kW, but torque drops from 420Nm to 400Nm and the engine loses a gasoline particulate filter.

VW Australia was forced to make the same change for the Golf R hatch to avoid a production glitch that would have left local buyers with an uncertain delivery schedule.

The Golf R station wagon retains all of the engine torque as well as the gasoline particulate filter. Priced the same as the $69,990 Tiguan R, the wagon does 0-100 km/h in a claimed 4.9 seconds.

The Tiguan shares all-wheel drive and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic with the Golfs, but lacks its Drift mode due to a less track-focused orientation.

Other standard performance features include large front brakes and adaptive dampers.

Selectable driving profiles include a racy R mode.

Standard wheels are Estoril 21 inch lightweight rims which are an option over 20 inch wheels in most markets including the UK. The Golf Rs are fitted with 19-inch wheels.

Other features included include; Matrix LED headlights, Nappa leather “R” comfort seats, heated and electrically adjustable front seats with driver memory, tri-zone climate control, rear privacy glass, automatic tailgate, semi-autonomous parking, self-driving capability partial and Harman Audio Kardon.

A head-up display and digital driver display are also standard, while the Discover Pro infotainment interface is contained within a 9.2-inch screen.

A panoramic glass sunroof is the only option.

The R range in Australia will be further bolstered later in 2022 with two more SUVs: the T-Roc R compact SUV (expected in August) and the large Touareg R plug-in hybrid SUV (expected in November).
