MAZDA has unveiled pricing and specifications for the distinctive new hybrid version of its city car that is sure to boost the car’s popularity.
Arriving in the UK in May and available to order now, the premium Japanese brand’s Mazda2 hybrid will have three trim levels – Pure, Agile and Select – and will cost from £20,300.
Based on the Toyota Yaris, it is a self-charging hybrid that combines a 1.5-liter three-cylinder petrol engine with a 59 kW electric motor and an automatic gearbox for a total output of 116 hp.
This allows it to go from 0-62mph in 9.7 seconds and average 70.6-74.3mpg and CO2 emissions of just 93-87g/km.
The Pure version features 15-inch steel wheels, automatic headlights and wipers, black cloth seat upholstery, a seven-inch infotainment setup, adaptive cruise control and lane-keep assist .
The £21,150 Agile adds 15-inch alloy wheels, a rear-view camera, eight-inch touchscreen and smart keyless entry.
The range-topping Select, priced at £23,610, includes privacy glass, 16-inch alloys, power folding mirrors, wireless smartphone charging and blind-spot monitoring with park assist.
In terms of driving, the Mazda2 Hybrid automatically operates in EV mode on start-up, then adjusts power between the gasoline engine and electric motor for optimal performance and fuel economy.
During deceleration and braking, energy is harvested to boost the electric motor battery, which is also aided by an engine-driven generator, so the car never needs to be plugged in.
The Mazda2 Hybrid will be sold alongside the facelifted petrol version which uses a 1.5-litre engine with three power outputs and a choice of seven trim levels, costing from £16,575 to £20,945.
Mazda UK boss Jeremy Thomson said: “The 2022 Mazda2 Hybrid and Mazda2 will ensure our customers have the widest choice of small cars in UK showrooms.
“The Mazda2 has at its heart the same values of style, driver involvement and quality that characterize all of our vehicles.”
