Vivo’s V-series is mostly about a good camera system, with other factors like battery life and good looks coming later.
I reviewed the V20 and V21 series and had a good time with the mid-range devices. Now comes Vivo’s V23 Pro, a feature-rich smartphone in the mid-range segment with several upgrades over its predecessors.
Here’s how the phone behaves after about a month of use:
Vivo V23 Pro: build and design
Available in two colors – Stardust Black and Sunshine Gold – Vivo’s V23 Pro is mid-range but looks premium with a slim profile. It has a polycarbonate frame that sticks with a glass back that has a matte texture.
What’s interesting is that the gradient finish on the glass back changes color from gold to blue when you tilt the handset slightly.
The V23 Pro has a slim profile and is also quite light at 171g, so daily use is quite easy.
It has a 6.5-inch FHD+ AMOLED curved display with a 90Hz refresh rate, and there’s a chunky notch at the top of the display that houses two front cameras flanked by two LED flashes hidden in the back. telescope. The volume rocker and power buttons are on the right edge. The screen produces vivid colors and offers good sunlight readability.
On the back there’s Vivo branding on the bottom and on top there’s a chunky camera panel housing a 108-megapixel main camera, an 8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera and a 2-megapixel macro camera. megapixels.
Overall the V23 Pro looks great and premium and the hand feel is good.
Vivo V23 Pro: Performance
The V23 Pro is packaged in a 6nm MediaTek Dimensity 1200 SoC, which is a capable processor. There are two configurations: the 8GB RAM + 128GB storage variant and the 12GB RAM + 256GB storage variant.
Additionally, there is Android 12 with custom FunTouch OS 12 skin.
I hardly encountered any lag or stutter while gaming or multitasking and gaming; the phone can easily perform regular tasks.
While hardcore gaming might be too much to ask of a more camera-focused phone, I had a great time playing Call of Duty on this phone, and that too at high frame and graphics settings .
The phone can easily handle heavy tasks like using the camera for photos and videos. There are hardly any signs of heating unless you put the phone under too much pressure.
All in all, you can do just about anything on this phone, it won’t let you down.
Vivo V23 Pro: Battery life
The V23 Pro has a 4,300mAh battery and comes with a 44W fast charger in the box. The phone takes about an hour to fully charge but I have to admit that the battery time is impressive as the phone can last almost two days with moderate usage.
If you use a camera with regular social media and gaming, even then it can easily last a day.
However, I was a bit disappointed with the speaker. It’s not loud enough, so unless you have good headphones, you might not be able to enjoy streaming on this phone.
Vivo V23 Pro: camera
Coming to the most important part, the cameras of the V23 Pro: on the rear panel are a 108-megapixel main camera, an 8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera and a 2-megapixel macro camera.
For selfies, there’s a 50MP main camera and an 8MP ultra-wide camera.
I must say this is one of the best selfie cameras I have seen so far. Plus, LED flashes make photos even better. You get clear, crisp images with good depth and detail.
Even videos from the front camera look really good; it could be an ideal phone for content creators.
Speaking of the rear camera, the 108MP lens produces decent images in difficult lighting conditions, but images come out great indoors and under proper lighting.
In low light, we obtain correct photos but this is not its strong point.
Some images look oversaturated, for example, if you click on an image in a garden, the trees and plants in the background look slightly artificial, but the faces and clothes are sharp.
The wide-angle camera is pretty decent but nothing too impressive as it lacks edge detail.
But the phone can prove to be a good companion for content creators as the camera system is really versatile and together with the software and filters you get a complete package.
Vivo V23 Pro: Verdict
Priced at Rs 38,990 (8GB + 128GB) and Rs 43,990 (12GB + 256GB), the Vivo V23 Pro is a tricky phone to recommend when the OnePlus 9R or even the Vivo X60 series, especially the one of my favorite X6O Pro, can be purchased by spending a few extra bucks.
That said, for someone who has a good front camera as a key requirement, this is indeed a phone that can be considered.
All in all, it seems a bit pricey, but then you have a balance of style and performance.
